Message from Viktor Solomin to the Competition Participants

  Dear participants,

Below you will find the assignments for all categories.  These include sheet music and backing tracks to support you on your exciting musical journey.

Each piece of sheet music indicates the number of choruses during which you are expected to perform:
  - The Head (the theme),
  - The written-out improvisation,
   - And your own improvisation based on the chords of a jazz standard.

You will also find scales and modes in the materials to help guide your improvisation.

In the same folders, participants from all age categories will find the required backing tracks for preparation and video recording.  You may choose the tempo, form, and duration of your improvisation.

However, contestants must use the backing track located in the folder appropriate for their age category.

A 12-chorus backing track is provided for training purposes.

Viktor Solomin
(1962)
Viktor Solomin is a Ukrainian composer, virtuoso domra and mandolin player, Heinrich Böll Foundation scholarship recipient, and laureate of international competitions. As a performer, he displays a wide stylistic range — from Sonatas and Partitas by Johann Sebastian Bach to free jazz improvisation. He is known for being the first to introduce the Ukrainian domra as a solo instrument within a jazz ensemble, as well as for initiating the development of the electric domra. His compositional works include music for the stage productions "Inconsolable Shadows" (Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, Germany), "Gespräche über die Komik, das Lachen und den Narren" (West-Ost Theater, Switzerland), works for solo mandolin and mandolin with orchestra, and numerous fantasies based on Ukrainian folk themes for various instruments. The domra is a Ukrainian plucked string instrument, tuned identically to the mandolin and played using similar techniques.
